Prosecco Di Valdobbiadene Superiore, Sorelle Bronca, "particella 181: Rive De Rua", Brut, 2023In an ocean of Prosecco, there are very few producers who stand out for quality like Sorelle Branca. The winery is headed by sisters, Antonella and Ersiliana Bronca, who source their fruit from the steep hillside vineyards of Valdobbiadene. Their "Particella 181: Rive de Rua" is farmed by hand on reddish, iron-tinged, stony marl soils, resulting in an intensely mineral-rich expression of Glera. As it opens in the glass, you are greeted with crisp green apple with honeysuckle floating over top and finishing with just a touch of ripe citrus. It's the perfect bottle to start your evening off with our fritto misto.112

Friulano, Venica & Venica, "ronco Delle Cime", 2024In the Collio region of Friuli Venezia Giulia are some of Italy's finest white wines. The Collio is characterized by luscious forests in the foothills of the Alps with terraced vineyards that abut the Slovenian border, a mere twenty miles from the Mediterranean Sea. Venica & Venica's vineyards sit on the famed "ponca" soil. This soil consists of layers of sandstone alternating with marl and silt, which gives its wines a distinctive minerality. Venica & Venica produces a wide range of varieties indigenous to the region, with a focus on the famed Friulano. The Friulano grape is typically poured in trattorias throughout Friuli as an aperitif served with prosciutto and cicchetti. Venica & Venica's expression is a different story that lends notes of pear, yellow peach, herbs, and wild flowers. Where this wine truly shines is its signature textural mouthfeel, begging for another sip.144

Toscana, Montenidoli, "il Templare", 2021At the heart of Montenidoli is Elisabetta Fagiuoli, a defining figure in Tuscan winemaking over the past half-century. Elisabetta's approach to winemaking has remained remarkably consistent over the decades. Reflecting on her inaugural 1971 vintage, she recalls, "I made the wine in the simplest way. I had nothing." That spirit of simplicity, guided by intuition and respect for the grape, still defines her work today. She often describes Vernaccia as "a white grape with the body of a red," a belief that informs her decision to incorporate skin contact during fermentation for all her white wines, adding depth, texture, and structure. Her "Il Templare" bottling is homage to the Knights of Templar who resided in the castle of San Gimignano and makes this cuvée exactly how they did. Elisabetta vinifies it in wood, as they did, with the three whites: Vernaccia, Trebbiano, and Malvasia. The "Il Templare" has dried orchard fruit, crushed flowers, spice, mint, and chamomile with a rich body while maintaining freshness and minerality.117

Verdicchio Dei Castelli Di Jesi Classico Superiore, Terralibera, 2024Terralibera, meaning freedom of the land, is a labor of love for owner and winemaker Gian Mario Bongini. After his grueling career in corporate finance, he was drawn to the beauty and bucolic nature of Le Marche. His seven hectares of vineyards are nested high up in the hills of Serra de' Conti in the shadow of the Apennines Mountains and only 20 miles from the Adriatic Sea. This ideal landscape creates the perfect place for one of Italy's most noble and underrated white grapes, Verdicchio. This crisp and mineral white lends notes of Meyer lemon, ripe peach, jasmine, and salted almond and is very reminiscent of Chablis... but at half the price.84

Colline Novaresi, Spanna, Conti, 2023Many producers throughout the world claim to be "boutique", "small production", or "artisanal", but there are only a handful that walk the walk like Conti. To put things in perspective, the standard Chicago city block is just over two hectares… Conti farms just one hectare of vines planted back in 1971. They only produce 1,500 bottles a year of their Colline Novaresi Spanna (Nebbiolo in Alto Piemonte). The Nebbiolo from Colline Novaresi leans toward the lighter, fresher end of the spectrum compared to Barolo and Barbaresco, making it great for its immediacy. You can expect crunchy red berries and rose petals, with a silky, expressive palate.107

Orcia Riserva, Fabbrica, "tinia", 2020There is a new age of producers in lesser-known areas of Tuscany that are taking Sangiovese to new heights. Tim Manning, UK expat and winemaker in Tuscany for decades, is a leader of this new age at Fabbrica Pienza. Fabbrica is in the Orcia DOC, just past the border of the famed region of Brunello di Montalcino. Fabbrica's Sangiovese is grown at high elevation on mineral-rich sandy-clayey soils reminiscent of soils in Crozes-Hermitage. Tim's winemaking is both classical and boundary-pushing, utilizing whole-cluster fermentations, very long macerations, and a mixture of concrete and large oak for aging. The Tinia Orcia Riserva Sangiovese, taken from two of the estate's best parcels, exudes finesse with haunting aromatics of rose petals, crunchy red cherry, strawberry, and fresh Tuscan herbs. This wine is the perfect balance of accessibility with a thought-provoking nature.153

Canalicchio Di Sopra, 2016Brunello di Montalcino has risen to be the premier interpretation of Tuscan Sangiovese. At the Riserva level, it ranks among some of the highest aging requirements of any other table wine in the world. By law, it may not be released until the 6th year following harvest, and is mandated to mature in oak for a minimum of two years. Full in body, a Riserva designated Brunello expresses all the traditional flavors one expects from the varietal with an emphasis on black cherry, chocolate notes, and a dark earthiness. The resulting wine is a more pronounced, luxurious bottling that only the hill of Montalcino can provide.689

Montefalco, Arnaldo Caprai, 2021Landlocked and often overlooked, Umbria is one of Italy's hidden gems for wine. Situated just south of Tuscany, Umbria shares a similar terroir and climate and produces serious wines that rival those of its northern neighbor. Arnaldo Caprai has been an integral part of showcasing Umbria's greatness since 1971. They are located in the small medieval town of Montefalco, synonymous with the winemaking region. In the terroir lie two of Italy's greatest grapes, Sagrantino and Sangiovese. Their 2021 Montefalco Rosso blends the two grapes, making for an experience of wildflowers, violets, red berry jam, and sweet spices.76

Montetino, "lemárie", 2024Montetino is an oddity in a region marked by bulk wines, massive yields, and fertile coastal plain vineyards. Benedetta and Marco of Montetino have taken a more difficult approach by sourcing their hectare and a half of vines at nearly 2,800 feet of elevation in the breathtaking Apennine Mountains of southwestern Abruzzo. Their remarkably old Montepulciano vines, dating back to the 1970's, are interspersed between apple, cherry, fig, almond, and plum trees and are farmed biodynamically. Each berry is painstakingly hand destemmed before being fermented whole and aged in concrete for a year. The resulting 2,500 bottles from this vintage are reminiscent of a crunchy, fresh, and peppery Cru Beaujolais.134

Etna Rosso, Girolamo Russo, "'a Rina", 2022Famed winemaker Giuseppe Russo of Girolamo Russo has been instrumental in the recent surge in popularity of Mt. Etna wines. In his early years, Giuseppe had his eyes set on his career in music and literature. However, in 2004 he returned to his hometown of Passopisciaro to tend to his father's 18 hectares of 100-year-old vines planted to varietals native to Mt. Etna. He rose to fame within the region after studying under some of Etna's greatest producers: Frank Cornelissen, Marco de Grazia of Tenuta delle Terre Nere, and Andrea Franchetti of Passopisciaro. As a classically trained pianist, Giuseppe is no stranger to precision and focus. His spellbinding wines of extreme elegance and depth can only be created on the volcanic terroir of Mount Etna. His "'a Rina" bottling exudes bright red berries, sweet spice, and a faint hint of tobacco displaying the true essence of Mt. Etna.92

From the onset of his career he channeled his energies into sourcing the best fruit he could find and, if he couldn't, would farm it himself. After the success of his initial project, Pax and his wife Pam founded the eponymous Pax Cellars. Utilizing much of the same land for this label, he started to produce an entire range of wines focused on elegance, freshness, and Old World techniques. All his grapes are hand-harvested, foot-crushed, and fermented whole cluster–a nod to his favorite producers in the Rhone–and he has continued to innovate by farming Chenin Blanc, Trousseau Gris, Gamay, and Vermentino. Alder Springs is a site he has been working with since 2005 and produces exceptional fruit around the town of Laytonville, more reminiscent of the Rhône he draws inspiration from.124

Brut Nature Champagne, Barrat-masson, "les Margannes", 2016Aurélie Barrat and Loïc Masson are a husband-and-wife team who toil over their seven hectares of vines in the small villages of Bethon and Villenauxe-la-Grande in the Côte de Sézanne region of Champagne. They farm organically and let their terroir speak for itself. Their "Les Margannes" comes from a single vineyard comprised of 40-year-old Chardonnay vines grown in classic chalky soils. Gattinara, Nervi-conterno, "valferana", 2019Winemaking in Gattinara dates back to Roman times and its wines have been sought after since the 1700's, well before the wines of Barolo and Barbaresco. Founded in 1906, Nervi is the oldest cantina in Gattinara. It has holdings in the appellation's two greatest crus - Molsino and Valferana - as well as the top sites of Garavoglie and Cassace. The key to Gattinara's greatness is its terroir: a rare vein of volcanic gravel, on steep, high-elevation slopes. In 2010 the Barolo region was officially demarcated and recognized for its 181 "Menzioni" (think "Premier Cru" and "Grand Cru" classifications in France). These designations celebrate the soulfully expressive characteristics of each site's diverse soils, varying altitudes, and unique grape growing typicity. Outside of the Côte de Nuits in Burgundy, there is perhaps no other region that is studied and dissected in greater detail than the zone of Barolo. Montefico, La Ca' Növa, "bric Mentina", 2018As you approach the village of Barbaresco, you'll find the Rocca family's 18th-century "La Ca' Növa" estate perched atop the renowned Montestefano vineyard—a place untouched by time with untold beauty. In recent years their Barbarescos have reached new heights surpassing some of the most esteemed estates in the eyes of many. Their Montefico bottling is sourced from a special parcel called Vigna Bric Mentina, which lies at the best part: the top of the sloping vineyard, facing south where the grapes receive the most sunlight. Their Montefico expresses rose petals, lavender, spice, crunchy dark berries, and a minty essence, a hallmark of the cru.166

The Produttori del Barbaresco makes some of the most renowned wines out of Piedmont today. Originally founded in 1958, after the Second World War, a young priest named Don Fiorino Marengo banded a group of 19 farmers amidst poverty and scarcity. From then on, the crew stuck to strict rules: only Nebbiolo grapes from Barbaresco, and focusing on the quality of the grapes, not just the quantity. By the 1980s, the label grew in prestige and size, and today more than 50 growers contribute to making outstanding terroir-driven Barbaresco.

By law, it may not be released until the 5th year following harvest, and is mandated to mature in oak for a minimum of two years, with four months in bottle. Full in body, Brunello expresses all the traditional flavors one expects from the varietal with an emphasis on black cherry, chocolate notes, and a dark earthiness. Conti Costanti, 2016"Great Man" history has a distinct charm. It is convenient to say that one person influenced history all on their own and made the world the way it is today. For the world of Brunello, that man is Ferruccio Biondi Santi, often credited with creating the style of Brunello. However, Tito Costanti of Conti Costanti worked side by side with him. The first winery to use the name "Brunello" at the Siena expo, beating Biondi Santi to it by 18 years, Conti Costanti has created a timeless classic style of Sangiovese that is earthy, balanced, and distinctly rustic. Their 2016 vintage is a spectacular window into one of the overlooked pioneers of this unique little hill.611

Tenuto Di Trino, "le Cupole, Toscana, 2023 - $168The late Andrea Franchetti began farming in the Orcia Valley in the 1980s as a pioneer of Bordeaux-style winemaking. He brought French techniques such as high-density, low-yield viticulture and began to put forward some of the most opulent and concentrated wines in all of Tuscany. As time marched on, his style slowly shifted to what it is today: a masterclass in finesse and elegance. The "Le Cupole" could hardly be described as shy, as it still showcases power to be placed next to any of the greats from Bordeaux to Napa. In the end, it stands on its own as uniquely a Super Tuscan.168

Alberico, "appia Antica", 2019 & Alberico, "alberico", 2017The story of Alberico begins with Prince Alberico Ludovisi, scion of one of Rome's most esteemed noble families. In 1946, he passionately devoted himself to organically cultivating some of the finest Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon just outside the walls of Rome - long before "organic" became a buzzword or "Super Tuscan" blends of non-native Italian grapes took off. His wine: "Tenuta di Fiorano", became a coveted gem among collectors, hailed as an absolute "unicorn". Just as he reached the peak of his craft, the engmatic prince abruptly halted production and mysteriously uprooted his vines, nearly letting his legacy slip away into obscurity. After Alberico's passing, his daughter inherited the vineyards, which forged a link to Italy's most icnonc wine family throught her marriage to Piero Antinori of Tignanello fame. Today, their daughers - Alessia, Albeira, and Allegra - salvaged a few rows of surviving vines and successfully revived this storied wine. Tiberio, "archivio", Montepulciano D'abruzzo, 2020Cristiana Tiberio and her brother, Antonio, have transformed their small winery in the quaint village of Cugnoli, Abruzzo, from barren land to star status in under 20 years. With stints at producers like Jacques Selosse in Champagne, Nicolas Joly at Coulee de Serrant, Egon Muller in the Mosel, and multiple producers in Chablis, it is no wonder that Cristiana's wines are some of the best in Italy. She specializes in single vineyard, old vine, and special clone bottlings that express a distinct side of Abruzzo that not many capture. Her Archivio is meticulously crafted from massal selected 67-year-old vines from four special biotypes of Montepulciano. Archivio, translating to "archive," is a homage to these biotypes, and each is named after the Tiberio family's dogs: Tione, Quarmari, Diana, and Otto. Established in 1970 by the Rapuzzi family, this winery is nestled near the Slovenian border, boasting a surprisingly warm climate for its northern location in the Friulian hills. While excelling in cultivating wines solely from indigenous grapes, Ronchi di Cialla is renowned for its successful revival of the nearly extinct Schioppettino grape. This achievement has positioned them as a reference point for the variety, alongside only one other estate in Italy – "Sassicaia" - to be recognized as DOC (Denominazione di Origine Controllata) or appellation in their own right. Girolamo Russo, "a'rina", 2024The Girolamo Russo Etna Rosso is an exquisite expression of the land on top of Mt.Etna. Located in Sicily, at the southern end of Italy's boot, this vineyard is the highest elevation in Europe with grapes planted at just over 2,500 feet. The volcanic soil and extended exposure to the sun offer a complexity unmatched by any other terroir. The grapes used for the Girolamo Russo's Etna Rosso are Nerello Mascalese and Nerello Cappuccio which produce a wine of great depth and character. This red posses bold aromatics which range from ripe black cherries to smokey notes. On the palate, it is medium-bodies with a long finish. The dark fruit flavors are complemented by notes of tobacco, leather, and gentle tannins. Martin Woods, "koosah", Eola-amity Hills, 2022Winemaker Evan Martin is humbly producing some of the greatest Pinot Noir found anywhere. Like a virtuoso artist, Evan's discerning taste leads him to maniacally select only the highest of quality grapes, sourced from vineyard sites as rare and exceptional as they come. Enter his pièce de résistance, the illustrious "Koosah" vineyard bottling. The name Koosah, derived from the dialect of the Coastal Salish people, evokes a sense of awe with its poetic translation, "beautiful ceiling in the sky," a fitting portrayal of its perch atop the crest of Eola-Amity Hills. To the direct west of the Koosah vineyard lies a majestic gap in the formidable Coastal Range mountains. It is through this opening (aka "Van Duzer Corridor") that Koosah lies completely exposed to cooler marine temperatures and the constant threat of tempestuous storm systems that could devastate the vineyard at any time. One might ponder the audacity of sourcing fruit from such an extreme and dramatic setting, but in the case of Koosah, fortune favors the bold.. Here, the Pinot Noir vines thrive, un-grafted and planted on their original rootstock, basking in warm days and cool nights but also benefitting from the high elevation where intensified UV rays gift the vineyard with one of the most prolonged and perfectly balanced growing seasons in the Willamette Valley. Limited and exceptionally special, the '21 Koosah tantalizes the senses with notes of Alpine spices, macerated dark cherries, and a touch of reduced pomegranate leaving a lasting impression of indulgence and sophistication.149
