Centered in the heart of the Grand Cru village of Louvios, the Mea family has been crafting Champagne for over a hundred years. The Mea family produces their "L'Assemblage" through the solera process, which is widely known in Sherry production and has grown in popularity in Champagne. This expression is composed of fruit going back to 2012, leading to immense complexity and aromas not typically found in non-vintage Champagne. The Mea's age, the "L'Assemblage for ten months before being on the lees for three years, twice the minimum for non-vintage Champagne. It has the complexity to carry you throughout your whole dining experience or is perfect to start your celebratory evening.176

Elvio purchased a magnificent and historic 18th-century farmhouse at the summit of Bricco Ravera, in the heart of Novello. By 1990, Elvio rebuilt the manor, created his self-named winery, and turned the old granaries into the wine cellars used today. Friulano, La Ponca, 2021In the Collio region of Friuli Venezia Giulia come some of Italy's finest white wines. The La Ponca estate, found in the hamlet of Scriò, is poised to become one of the great producers of the region. Luscious forests in the foothills of the Alps surround their terraced vineyards that abut the Slovenian border a mere twenty miles from the Mediterranean Sea. The winery takes its name from the "ponca" soil type it sits upon. This soil consists of layers of sandstone alternating with marl and silt that give their wines a distinctive minerality. La Ponca produces a wide range of varietals indigenous to the region with a focus on the famed Friulano. The Friulano grape is typically poured in trattorias throughout Friuli as an aperitif served with prosciutto and cicchetti. La Ponca's expression is a different story that lends notes of flint, pear, and apricots, with a scent of wildflowers and mint in the distance. Where this wine truly shines is its signature textural mouthfeel begging for another sip.124

After his grueling career in corporate finance, he was drawn to the beauty and bucolic nature of Le Marche. His seven hectares of vineyards are nested high up in the hills of Serra de' Conti in the shadow of the Apennines Mountains and only 20 miles from the Adriatic Sea. This ideal landscape creates the perfect place for one of Italy's most noble and underrated white grapes, Verdicchio. "Insieme", meaning "togetherness" in Italian, conveys the different soils, altitudes, and expositions of the Contrada San Paterniano vineyard that result in a beautifully complete wine. This crisp and mineral white lends notes of Meyer lemon, ripe peach, jasmine, and salted almond and is very reminiscent of Chablis... but at half the price.83

Chardonnay, though, holds a special place in the hearts of winemaker Ehren Jordan. The estate boasts eight different bottlings of the grape with their "Estate" cuvee sitting as their most renowned bottling. The plot of land responsible for producing their Sonoma Coast bottlings lies on Olivet Road bordering the famed "Olivet Lane Vineyard." This vineyard site has been producing expressive and elegant examples of Chardonnay since 2013. Ehren is always one to experiment with different grapes, winemaking practices, and vineyard sites. Brandini, 2021In recent years, the Bagnasco sisters, Giovanna and Serena, have emerged in the Langhe, becoming champions of wines with freshness and elegance. In the words of Giovanna, "...we found the courage to be ourselves and start to make the wines we love the way we love to make them." Situated in the heart of the Barolo region in the small town of La Morra, they craft some of Piemonte's best expressions of Nebbiolo, Barbera, Dolcetto, Arnies, and Alta Langa. Finding Barberas with balance and beautiful aromatics is becoming more challenging in today's climate. Brandini sources their Barbera from a high-elevation vineyard just south of Monforte d'Alba, just outside the Barolo zone. The resulting wine expresses itself with brambly fruits, licorice, Salvadorian coffee, and violets.82

Paolo grew up here and is now paying his respect to the land that shaped him. Their vineyards are in the historic district of Ori (meaning 'gold' in Italian), characterized by its bright yellow, deep marine sands. The Nebbiolo (locally known as "Spanna") that grows here takes a different form than the expressions of Barolo and Barbaresco. Since Lorenzo Scavino took the helm at Azelia, the wines have been nothing but elegant, aromatic, and showing a great sense of place. He sources his fruit from 50-yearold vines in the limestone-rich soils of Serralunga d'Alba and Castiglione Falletto, both communes of power and perfume. You can expect intense rose, violet, and cinnamon aromas with smoky minerality, pomegranate, and red currants.157

These designations celebrate the soulfully expressive characteristics of each site's diverse soils, varying altitudes, and unique grape growing typicity. Outside of the Cote de Nuits in Burgundy, there is perhaps no other region that is studied and dissected in greater detail than the zone of Barolo. Bricco Di Neive, Cigliuti, "vie-erte", 2019Since the founding of Cigluiti in 1964, the winery's focus has always been quality over quantity. In Piedmont before the 1980s, it was sacrilegious to practice "green harvesting" or cutting grapes to concentrate the quality of the remaining grapes. Renato of Cigliuti was told by his neighbors he was throwing away money for green harvesting, and in his first vintage, he produced 300 bottles. Today, he and his daughters stand as one of the premier producers of Barbaresco that no one has ever heard of. Their Bricco di Neive hails from a small plot known as Vie Erte just outside of the town of Neive. Renato's approach has always been to let the terroir speak for itself in the glass through his mantra, "this blessed land." His Vie-Erte does just that by lending notes of bright red fruit, orange peel, white pepper, and mint that scream nuance and finesse.178

With stints at producers like Jacques Selosse in Champagne, Nicolas Joly at Coulee de Serrant, Egon Muller in the Mosel, and multiple producers in Chablis, it is no wonder that Cristiana's wines are some of the best in Italy. She specializes in single vineyard, old vine, and special clone bottlings that express a distinct side of Abruzzo that not many capture. Her Archivio is meticulously crafted from massal selected 67-year-old vines from four special biotypes of Montepulciano. Archivio, translating to "archive," is a homage to these biotypes, and each is named after the Tiberio family's dogs: Tione, Quarmari, Diana, and Otto. The final wine produced exudes a distinct silky texture with tart raspberry and savory spice mingled with violet inner florals.153

Etna Rosso, Girolamo Russo, "'a Rina", 2021Famed winemaker Giuseppe Russo of Girolamo Russo has been instrumental in the recent surge in popularity of Mt. Etna wines. In his early years, Giuseppe had his eyes set on his career in music and literature. However, in 2004 he returned to his hometown of Passopisciaro to tend to his father's 18 hectares of 100-year-old vines planted to varietals native to Mt. Etna. He rose to fame within the region after studying under some of Etna's greatest producers: Frank Cornelissen, Marco de Grazia of Tenuta delle Terre Nere, and Andrea Franchetti of Passopisciaro. As a classically trained pianist, Giuseppe is no stranger to precision and focus. His spellbinding wines of extreme elegance and depth can only be created on the volcanic terroir of Mount Etna. His "'a Rina" bottling exudes bright red berries, sweet spice, and a faint hint of tobacco displaying the true essence of Mt. Etna.88

Like a virtuoso artist, Evan's discerning taste leads him to maniacally select only the highest of quality grapes, sourced from vineyard sites as rare and exceptional as they come. Enter his pièce de résistance, the illustrious "Koosah" vineyard bottling. The name "Koosah", derived from the dialect of the Coastal Salish people, evokes a sense of awe with its poetic translation, "beautiful ceiling in the sky," a fitting portrayal of its perch atop the crest of Eola-Amity Hills. To the direct west of the Koosah vineyard lies a majestic gap in the formidable Coastal Range mountains. It is through this opening (aka "Van Duzer Corridor") that Koosah lies completely exposed to cooler marine temperatures and the constant threat of tempestuous storm systems that could devastate the vineyard at any time. One might ponder the audacity of sourcing fruit from such an extreme and dramatic setting, but in the case of Koosah, fortune favors the bold. Here, the Pinot Noir vines thrive, un-grafted and planted on their original rootstock, basking in warm days and cool nights but also benefitting from the high elevation where intensified UV rays gift the vineyard with one of the most prolonged and perfectly balanced growing seasons in the Willamette Valley. Limited and exceptionally special, the '21 "Koosah" tantalizes the senses with notes of Alpine spices, macerated dark cherries, and a touch of reduced pomegranate leaving a lasting impression of indulgence and sophistication.136

From the onset of his career he channeled his energies into sourcing the best fruit he could find and, if he couldn't, would farm it himself. After the success of his initial project, Pax and his wife Pam founded the eponymous Pax Cellars. Utilizing much of the same land for this label, he started to produce an entire range of wines focused on elegance, freshness, and Old World techniques. All his grapes are hand-harvested, foot-crushed, and fermented whole cluster–a nod to his favorite producers in the Rhone–and he has continued to innovate by farming Chenin Blanc, Trousseau Gris, Gamay, and Vermentino. Alder Springs is a site he has been working with since 2005 and produces exceptional fruit around the town of Laytonville, more reminiscent of the Rhône he draws inspiration from.124
