Barolo, Luigi Oddero, "convento", 2019Given Oddero's staggering 35 hectares worth of Nebbiolo di Barolo, the estate has historically sold off a portion of its production in bulk, reserving the best-exposed sites in the best spots for its Barolo "Tradizionale". In exceptional vintages, however, they now bottle a second Barolo, mainly from parcels in La Morra. They named it "Convento"—a nod to the fact that their estate was a convent in the early 17th century. It is vinified and aged just like their Barolo "Tradizionale": natural fermentation in stainless steel, followed by two years in large Slavonian-oak casks. "Convento" emphasizes purity of fruit over structure, with a lifted mineral streak of lovely clarity. That said, it is still very much a traditional Barolo in the style of Oddero, bearing no trace of oak aromatics or wood tannins, and with a perfume simultaneously ethereal and savory.162

Founded in 1906, Nervi is the oldest cantina in Gattinara. It has holdings in the appellation's two greatest crus - Molsino and Valferana - as well as the top sites of Garavoglie and Cassace. The key to Gattinara's greatness is its terroir: a rare vein of volcanic gravel, on steep, high-elevation slopes. Montefico, La Ca' Növa, "bric Mentina", 2018As you approach the village of Barbaresco, you'll find the Rocca family's 18th-century "La Ca' Növa" estate perched atop the renowned Montestefano vineyard—a place untouched by time with untold beauty. In recent years their Barbarescos have reached new heights surpassing some of the most esteemed estates in the eyes of many. Their Montefico bottling is sourced from a special parcel called Vigna Bric Mentina, which lies at the best part: the top of the sloping vineyard, facing south where the grapes receive the most sunlight. Their Montefico expresses rose petals, lavender, spice, crunchy dark berries, and a minty essence, a hallmark of the cru.166

The Produttori del Barbaresco makes some of the most renowned wines out of Piedmont today. Originally founded in 1958, after the Second World War, a young priest named Don Fiorino Marengo banded a group of 19 farmers amidst poverty and scarcity. From then on, the crew stuck to strict rules: only Nebbiolo grapes from Barbaresco, and focusing on the quality of the grapes, not just the quantity. By the 1980s, the label grew in prestige and size, and today more than 50 growers contribute to making outstanding terroir-driven Barbaresco.

Rufina, Selvapiana, 2024Chianti has always been centered between Florence and Sienna, the original growing zone that was first recognized in 1713 by Cosimo Medici III. In the 1960's, plantings grew outside of the original zone(now called Classico) into almost the entire Tuscan region. In response to falling quality, subzones were created, one great one in the commune of Rufina. Rufina's Chiantis drink a little more rustically, more earthy than polished. His wine: "Tenuta di Fiorano", became a coveted gem among collectors, hailed as an absolute "unicorn". Just as he reached the peak of his craft, the engmatic prince abruptly halted production and mysteriously uprooted his vines, nearly letting his legacy slip away into obscurity. After Alberico's passing, his daughter inherited the vineyards, which forged a link to Italy's most icnonc wine family throught her marriage to Piero Antinori of Tignanello fame. Today, their daughers - Alessia, Albeira, and Allegra - salvaged a few rows of surviving vines and successfully revived this storied wine. She specializes in single vineyard, old vine, and special clone bottlings that express a distinct side of Abruzzo that not many capture. Her Archivio is meticulously crafted from massal selected 67-year-old vines from four special biotypes of Montepulciano. Located in Sicily, at the southern end of Italy's boot, this vineyard is the highest elevation in Europe with grapes planted at just over 2,500 feet. The grapes used for the Passopisciaro Etna Rosso are Nerello Mascalese and Nerello Cappuccio which produce a wine of great depth and character. It is through this opening (aka "Van Duzer Corridor") that Koosah lies completely exposed to cooler marine temperatures and the constant threat of tempestuous storm systems that could devastate the vineyard at any time. One might ponder the audacity of sourcing fruit from such an extreme and dramatic setting, but in the case of Koosah, fortune favors the bold.. Here, the Pinot Noir vines thrive, un-grafted and planted on their original rootstock, basking in warm days and cool nights but also benefitting from the high elevation where intensified UV rays gift the vineyard with one of the most prolonged and perfectly balanced growing seasons in the Willamette Valley. Limited and exceptionally special, the '21 Koosah tantalizes the senses with notes of Alpine spices, macerated dark cherries, and a touch of reduced pomegranate leaving a lasting impression of indulgence and sophistication.149
