Featured Half Bottle of California Chardonnay
Trefethen, Oak Knoll District, 2022In 1979, the venerable French restaurant publication Gault & Millau set out to settle a score started three years prior between French and American wines. They created the World Wine Olympics, and to everyone's surprise, Trefethen's 1976 Chardonnay was declared "The Best Chardonnay in the World," beating out Burgundy's top producers. After the French winemakers and press expressed their extreme outrage, a rematch was held and overseen by Maison Joseph Drouhin. Incredibly, Trefethen's 1976 Chardonnay, tasted blind, was again declared the winner. Why not try a piece of improbable wine history? (Just don't tell the French.)61

Michel Gonet, "vindey-montgueux", Extra BrutChampagne is passion. On one hand it is a beverage that seamlessly represents celebration for many, and on the other is one of the most meticulously handled wine products on Earth. At Michel Gonet, the care goes from vineyard to cellar, from hand harvest to extended lees aging. The result is a Champagne of the highest quality and finesse. The family created this new cuvée separate from their plots in Mesnil to showcase these special terroirs149

Featured Vintage Champagne
Champagne Minière F&r, "symbiose", Extra Brut, 2013Minière's "Symbiose" cuvée is made from just two tiny, top-tier plots and aged over 10 years on the lees—over three times as long as the legal requirement. Frédéric Minière, who once trained with Champagne legend Anselme Selosse, fell hard for oak barrels and organic farming, and now makes unapologetically serious wine with a low-intervention mindset. With only two hectares in production, this is small-batch, big-impact Champagne that knows exactly what it's doing—and doesn't need to shout about it251

Featured Sancerre
Lucien Reymond, 2024Lucien Reymond's story starts not in the Loire but in the Rhône where he worked as a négociant, with his grandson, Olivier, as his protégé. Lucien's passion for Sancerre was a frequent topic with Olivier, so 30 years later when Olivier named his winery in the region, he named it for his beloved grandfather. The wines are a celebration of terroir with an emphasis on biodynamic farming and embracing the natural beauty that the soils of Sancerre impart on the wines.116

Featured Alsatian Wine
Riesling Et Al., Marcel Deiss, "engelgarten", 2018In a region as old as Alsace, where winemaking dates back to the second century, innovation is usually uncommon and even frowned upon. However, innovation is what makes the wines of Marcel Deiss so exciting (and what makes the man himself so controversial). Instrumental in changing Alsatian labeling laws to allow for blends, he believes more in showcasing the unique qualities of vineyards planted with multiple grapes over the individuality of a single grape. This field blend (of Riesling, Pinot Blanc, and other Alsatian varietals) from the sparse, gravelly soils of Engelgarten is a must for any white wine lover looking for something new121

Domaine Laroche, "saint Martin", 2023Chablis & oysters: a match made in heaven or, more precisely, earth. The finest soils of Chablis are studded with fossilized oyster shells, so it's no surprise they make one of the most well-known food and wine pairings in the world. There's no need to reinvent the wheel here, so instead we present a family-run domaine with deep roots in Chablis (see what we did there?) dating back over 150 years102

Domaine RaveneauFrançois Raveneau's wines gained a cult following decades ago, with wine lovers around the world jumping at the chance to get their hands on anything available. The Domaine has barely grown in size since the initial purchase of a handful of small vineyards within the best Premier and Grand Cru land right after establishment in 1948. Still farmed by François' sons and granddaughter, these small plots combined only equal about eight city blocks and exist on land more coveted than Fifth Avenue

Pierre Girardin, "Éclat De Calcaire", 2022Winemaking in Burgundy is very rarely done by choice, it is something you are born with in your blood. Take Pierre-Vincent Girardin: the latest in the 13 generations of Girardin winemakers. When his father sold his domaine in 2011, he made sure to keep select plots to hand down to his son. In 2017, Pierre-Vincent crafted his first vintage from choice parcels, and has established himself as one of the finest young winemakers in France. He has cultivated close relationships with growers that his father had worked with for outstanding vineyard sites and even commissioned venerated cooper François Frères to make a custom 456 liter barrel solely for his white wines. The "Éclat de Calcaire" cuvée is sourced from vines around forty years old from excellent parcels in Meursault, Volnay, and Pommard. Open a bottle to see the magic of Burgundy's newest generation151

Domaine De La Romanée-contiNo winery is more famous or produces such legendary wines in Burgundy than Domaine de la Romanée-Conti. The domaine has been co-owned by two families, the de Villaine's and the Roch's/ Leroy's, since 1942. Aubert de Villaine, a humble, charming, and highly intelligent vigneron, who is acutely conscious of the history of the domaine and the responsibility he bears towards it, has been the manager and face of the domaine since 1991, when Lalou Bize-Leroy left to focus on her own domaine. Often abbreviated as DRC, the winery makes some of the most exclusive wines in the world, and 98% of their vineyard holdings are in Grand Cru vineyards, including their 2 "monopoles", La Tâche and Romanée-Conti. DRC's wines, for those lucky enough to have tried them, are regarded as the pinnacle of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay

Château La Garde, Pessac-léognan, 2023Although it's primarily known as a stand-alone grape varietal, Sauvignon Blanc can also make a great blending partner under the right circumstances. Some of those circumstances include growing in the pristine gravel soils of Château La Garde within Pessac-Léognan. Others include pairing up with the exceedingly complementary blending partner, Sémillon. The soil contributes to the wine's powerfully pure aromatics, while the Sémillon serves to fill out the midpalate and body, creating a whole that is more complex, more intriguing than the sum of its parts129

Saar, Peter Lauer, "ayler Kupp No. 7", 2023Over 100 years ago, wines from the Saar region of the Mosel were more highly prized on international wine lists than those from Bordeaux or Burgundy. It was during this time, in 1830, that Peter Lauer's great-great-grandfather, Matthias, laid the foundation for some of the vineyards found in this "No. 7" bottling from the village of Ayl. For Riesling purists, Lauer represents a singular, unmistakable point of view that is unique to the Saar: a wine of intensity, depth, and persistent lift, balanced to perfection112

Veyder-malberg, "liebedich", Wachau, 2022Not only does Peter Veyder-Malberg farm an area of Austria so steep that grape growing families who have been there for centuries are sadly quitting on a yearly basis, but he goes beyond organic viticulture by constantly cultivating his working relationships with the myriad creatures who call his vineyards home. From mushrooms down to the microorganisms growing on the roots of the vines, his extreme care comes through his wines via layered minerality, electric citrus, and a unique savoriness that only Austria's finest Grüners can achieve105

Girolamo Russo, "nerina", Etna, 2023Etna is unlike many other wine producing regions in the world. Most notably the home of Europe's highest active volcano, Mt. Etna, one would not consider this to be an ideal place to grow grapes—dangerously steep, rocky soils, unpredictable weather, and the threat of volcanic eruption at any point. Very few are up for the challenge of making wine under such extreme circumstances. The work of these daring vintners combined with the region's indigenous white varietals result in wines like "Nerina:" energetic fruit and fresh minerality with an elegant structure— making Etna Bianco the next big thing for Burgundy lovers111

Leeuwin, "prelude", Margaret River, 2023As one of the first five wineries in Western Australia's now world-renowned Margaret River region, the Leeuwin family is among the country's winemaking royalty. But don't let that fool you—this Chardonnay is not meant to be sipped pinkies-up from the finest crystal (although you certainly could drink it that way). This is a working man's nobility story: the Leeuwin's transformed their cattle ranch into a world-class winery roughly 50 years ago with the help of Napa's own Robert Mondavi. Fast forward half a century and not only is the family still at the helm, but they're also still making wine accessible to anyone and everyone89

Featured California Sauvignon Blanc
Presqu'ile, Santa Barbara County, 2023This small, family-run winery located in California's Central Coast is quickly becoming renowned for their fresh, Old World-inspired wines, and this Sauvignon Blanc is no exception. In a full break with traditional American convention, no new oak is used for fermentation or aging; instead, they use neutral oak and even concrete. These vessels, along with the distinctly cool climate of Santa Barbara County, give this Sauvignon Blanc a fresh, vibrant, Sancerre-like feeling72

Morgon, Marchand-tawse, 2021Originally from Quebec, Pascal Marchand traveled the world before settling in Burgundy in 1983. After completing his oenological studies, he quickly rose to be a defining figure in Bungundian winemaking and a pioneer of biodynamics and sustainability in the region. Very early in his career he made the decision to transition completely to biodynamic principles in viticulture, holding a very firm belief that great wine comes from healthy vineyards. He became the only the second non-Frenchman to lead the winemaking team at Comte Armand. In 2011, in a partnership with fellow French-Canadian Moray Tawse, of the eponymous Tawse Winery in Niagara, Maison Marchand-Tawse was born. Combining their expertise they offer a snapshot of Morgon that showcases some of the best that Beaujolais has to offer76

Jean-marc Pillot, "v.v.", 2020Jean-Marc Pillot is the fourth generation of his branch of the Pillot family to tend vineyards in Chassagne Montrachet. He joined his father, Jean, in 1985 to learn the craft of "vigneron". After six years of working side-by-side, Jean-Marc assumed the direction of the domaine in 1991 with the assistance of his wife, Nadine, and his sister, Beatrice. With this bottling, Jean-Marc produces a remarkable red Chassagne-Montrachet from just over a hectare of Pinot Noir vines planted in 1960. This old-vine cuvée is noteworthy in its complexity, structure, and purity of fruit which speaks clearly of its origins159

Sylvie Esmonin, 2020The Esmonin family's roots run deep—back to when Burgundy had dukes instead of borders. Though Sylvie never expected to take the reins, fate (and her father's two daughters) had other plans. Her wines reflect her philosophy: perfection is overrated; character is everything. Expect a Gevrey-Chambertin with soul—ruby to carmine in color, brimming with red fruit, violets, and the whisper of forest floor. Power and grace, an expression of GevreyChambertin shaped by Sylvie's unyielding character and touch239

Featured Grand Cru Burgundy
Clos De Vougeot, Jean Grivot, 2021Grand Cru Burgundy may be the most profoundly titled wine of them all. Sacrificing none of the delicacies or nuances while also featuring depth and concentration, the classification is understandably hard to live up to. This unique site receives a more significant downdraft of air, which keeps the vines cooler and yields a wine of exceptional elegance and balance. These wines perform best when allowed to purely represent the vineyard with little to no bells or whistles934

Clos Margalaine, Margaux, 2014Philippe Porcheron acquired this small garagista estate in 1998, located just outside the tiny village of Margaux. The Romans had referred to this place as "Marojallia," the name bestowed on the château. The "grand vin" debut in 1999 and made waves as on of the Medoc's first "Garage Wines:'' no bells and whistles, just good juice in a no-frills bottle. Renowned consultant Michel Rolland joined the team with the 2001 vintage and the estate continues to be one of the best boutique producers in Bordeaux. Located right down the street from first-growth Château Margaux and second-growth Rauzan-Ségla, "Clos Margalaine" is the second label of the estate, and this "little" producer packs a big punch with quality, elegance, and finesse168

J.l. Chave, "mon Coeur", 2023If there were a name synonymous with the hill of Hermitage, it would be that of Jean-Louis Chave. The family began making wine in 1481, passing down wisdom through generations to create some of the most perfectly balanced wines in the world. Traditionalist to the core, the key to this perfect balance of his wines is the remarkable blending skill, which is showcased in all of his wine from the top Hermitage to his thoughtful Côtes du Rhône74

Featured Chianti Classico
Cigliano Di Sopra, 2022Hailing from the village of San Casciano in the heart of Chianti (the very same as the famed Antinori "Tignanello" bottling), it's safe to say these hills are capable of world-class Sangiovese. It only helps that the husband and wife team behind Cigliano di Sopra pay such careful attention to their wine that their third family dog's name is Alice III. The way they make their Chianti—with whole-berry fermentation and neutral oak aging—allows the terroir of this small village to shine. This is not your average Chianti Classico109

Featured Barolo Riserva
Franco Molino, 2018Piedmont's mosaic of terroirs reveals itself in Franco Molino's Barolo Riserva, a blend of select crus from Barolo, La Morra, and Castiglione Falletto. Clay soils in Barolo and La Morra lend floral aromatics and supple fruit, while Castiglione's limestone and sandstone add structure and depth. Produced only in outstanding vintages and aged over five years before release, this Riserva captures the harmony and complexity that define great Barolo—where every bottle marks both time and place with quiet distinction111

Featured Argentinian Malbec
Catena Zapata, Paraje Altamira, 2023The Catena family not only has strong roots in Argentinian winemaking, they can also boast some of the very first. Nicola Catena, an Italian immigrant, planted his first vineyard in Mendoza, Argentina in 1902. Now in its fourth generation as a family-run winery, each family member has played a major role in enhancing the reputation and quality of Argentinian wine. This 100% Malbec is sourced from the estate's own 30-year-old, high-altitude vineyards in the Uco Valley, a prestigious sub-region of Mendoza81

Domaine De Travail, "garey", Santa Maria Valley, 2023This single-vineyard bottling tells the story of two childhood friends—Gary Franscioni and Gary Pisoni—whose shared roots and passion for winegrowing led to a remarkable partnership. Influenced by generations of viticultural tradition, they planted Garys' Vineyard in 1997 in the heart of the Santa Lucia Highlands. There, morning fog and cool, steady winds from Monterey Bay create ideal conditions for ripening fruit while preserving vibrant acidity. This Pinot Noir from Domaine de Travail embodies the classic hallmarks of the Central Coast: bright fruit, elegant herbaceous notes, and a refreshing mineral finish99

Featured Junmai Ginjo
Yamada Nishiki, Tensei, "song Of The Sea", KanagawaHailing from the same province as the famous Japanese woodblock art, "The Great Wave of Kanagawa", toji Tetsuro Igarashi brews refined and refreshing sake from this seaside region of Japan. Crafted from the "king" of sake rice, Yamada Nishiki, and supported by the rich underground water of the Tanzawa Mountains, this Junmai Ginjo has no added alcohol–just pure flavor from the starch at the center of these intensely polished rice grains. The delicate flavors and round texture are a great pairing with a variety of dishes, a perfect introduction to highquality Japanese sake97

Featured Tokaji Aszú
Pajzos, "5 Puttonyos", 2016Tokaji: a dessert wine so nuanced and impressive that Catherine the Great set up a garrison in the town of Tokaji to protect its delivery. Emperor Franz Josef sent Queen Victoria bottles religiously for her birthday. Louis XV referred to it as the "Wine of Kings". Beethoven, Peter the Great, and Thomas Jefferson preferred it to all other sweet wines. Don't you want to join this company of characters?124

The Wines of Château d'Yquem
There is wine...and then there is Château d'Yquem. In anticipation of the World's Fair in Paris, it was the only estate named in the top level "Premier Cru Supérieur" by Napoleon III in the Graves Classification of 1855. It has demanded some of the highest prices in the wine world for well over 200 years. Thomas Jefferson supposedly ordered 250 bottles of the 1784 vintage for himself alone, and additional for his good friend George Washington. There isn't any "lesser vintage" wine from this estate; if it's not perfect, no Sauternes is produced that year. The 1811 "Comet Vintage" is still storied, having been rated "the ultimate '100 points'" by Robert Parker while tasting it in 1996. Widely considered the "definitive" dessert wine, these are wines that will surely outlive us all
